In a former life, we used many large wire wrap boards and large
backplanes. The power and ground circuits were connected directly to the
pins of the press-fit connectors. All of these connectors had the long wire
wrap tails. Signals were then routed as needed via the wire wrap process.
We used those boards and backplanes for many years. Many are still in
operation.
The system is costly, but effective, especially if you have a dynamic
product. There are (or were) several companies that specialized in press
fit backplanes. I don't recall any of them being highly automated in their
assembly processes. One company that comes to mind is Litton Ind Advncd
Circuitry 4811 W Kearney St, Springfield, MO 65803-9579 USA Phone:
(417)862-0751 Fax: (417)862-152. A search of the Thomas Register might
turn up more.
Some of the theories behind the effectiveness of the press fit
connector are:

1. There are no large temperature excusions applied to the board.
2. The pins are compliant to some degree and maintain a "gas tight" contact
with the barrel of the holes to insure a low resistance connection.

I am sure there are more things that fit into the equation here, but
these are the things that come to mind at the moment.

IMHO, press fit has its place, but is not suitable for all
applications.

I hope this helps answer some of your questions.

Charlie B.

Subject: [TECHNET] Press Fit

I posted a question a few days ago about Press Fit Connectors. I've started
to understand the answer myself.
Press Fit connectors are a mechanical means of making contact with no
soldering.
PTH connectors which go through a soldering process that requires CAD
layout

Please, please, please there must be someone out there with an opinion on
