Dear TechNetters,

my company is building multi-chip-modules which have on each side pins
for soldering the mcm onto a board. Pins are of the gullwing or j-lead
type and have a pitch of 1.27 mm (1/20 of an inch). Pin counts per side
range up to 25. Standoff is about 3 to 4 mm. Side lengthes of the mcms
range up to 45 mm.

We are currently looking for measuring means or apparatus to determine
the coplanarity of the pins (more exactly: coplanarity of the deepest
points of the pins, which will rest on the board to solder to).

The goal is to detect every mcm with pins having deviation from ideal
coplanarity of more than 0.2 mm. As a measuring result the difference
between the lowest and highest pin will be sufficient. Apparatus thus
must not be too sophisticated (and therefore not too expensive).
Handling should be easy. Since several hundreds of mcms a day have to be
measured (with increasing tendency) measuring time should be adequate.
Also there is need to easily adopt to different types of mcms and
pinnings.

Would you please advice.

Replies of manufacturers of such measuring devices are welcome, which
please contact me directly (remember the ad/no ad debates at TechNet?).
