You CAN NEVER get a virus on your machine from simply opening a text
based e-mail.  HOWEVER should that e-mail contain an attachment, and you
have your browser set to automatically save attachments, then yes you
can get a virus.

Anytime anyone says you can get a virus by simply reading an e-mail, IT
IS A HOAX.
