We design boards with silkscreen text letters that are 40 high and 40 wide
(mils) and the lines are 8 mils thick (sometimes 5). Of course I have no
idea what the fab house does to the line widths in the gerber files once
I've sent them out, but this text size is certainly readable and compact
enough that we haven't had problems.
