I instituted a tracking system from Bacon Software that worked fairly well,
and addressed the issues that we needed to be addressed.

One point I would like to make is the bar coding wands. I agree, that a laser
wand is much faster in as that it usually reads the first pass. However,
after installing the wands, we found that the wands were sufficient for those
stations that simply needed to log in a job. Those stations, such as
engineering and quality, where additional typed input was required, the wands
were not used. The operaters found it easier to just type in the number. The
tracking system prevented any typed errors from passing through the system.
We also installed programmable keyboards at those stations that had a lot of
repetitive input, such as engineering scheduling, etc. The keyboards
supported 240 levels of programmability allowing us to program many job
sequences with few key strokes.

Regards,

Gary
