Subject: DESIGN of SMT Land Pattern Standards

Problem: I am a beginner to surface mount design technology and in
trying to determine the correct land pattern sizes for SMT
          components, I referred to IPC-D-275 and IPC-SM-782A, but, I
am rather confused. The IPC-SM-782A subsection 8.1 pages
3 & 4 show tables of components and MMC land sizes, while
IPC-D-275 section 5.3.4 shows tables & sizes which differ
from IPC-SM-782A and a formula which when used to calculate
the land pattern of a 1206 resistor detailed in the 'DALE'
catalogue gives me yet another slightly different size.

Question: Can you please tell me,

       a. If there is a document in existance which will give me a
complete list of standard components and their land pattern
          sizes?
       or

       b. How I can overcome this confusion.

          Thanking you in advance

          DJH
