I have some experience with RF shielding on SMT boards. Primarily
chem etched folded shields made of tin plated brass, copper or
beryllium copper. The shields were installed onto the surface
mount board after pick & place but prior to hot air reflow
soldering. Tabs at the bottom of the shield were used to locate it
into plated thru holes in the board. Solder paste was also printed
such that the bottom edge of the shield was set into the paste.
The assembly was then soldered in a hot air reflow oven, yielding
a solder connection from the board ground plane to the edge of the
shield over its entire perimeter. The shield design incorporated a
snap on removable cover. Therefore, parts inside the fence were
not covered during reflow. If you have any specific questions or
need more info please feel free to call me at (516) 595-6667 or e-
mail any time.
