Bruce,
We currently use ink jets to mark the lot code into the pcbs.
Depending on the ink, the lot code can be washed of with certain
solvents. Contact Domino. We "used" to use lasers. The laser woud
burn the date code into the solder resist. It is permenant. Contact
Lumonics. Both methods were/are automated on a conveyor. Both
are very fast. The laser is more permenant, but I think the ink jets are
more flexible in terms of size and characters available. You will need
an equipment manufacturer to build an automated system.

I am looking for a method to mark PCB's with lot numbers that can be
placed in various locations on the board depending on the product.
It
needs to be permanent and resistent to flux and solvents. The
method
needs to be automated with a feed mechanism, if possible. I am
thinking
of hot stamping, thermal transfer, ink jet, laser. Is there anything
commercially available fot this purpose?
