I don't have much time, but wanted to write one quick note: (ok, maybe
two)  
be warned that many vendors STILL can't read 274X (how many years old
now?) 
so if you use low-tech fab houses....

Also, if you use the same vendors consistently, it is to you AND your
company's advantage to speak with them! They may have some ideas from
working with your data over and over again, things you may not have
considered (and this is NOT stepping on the purchasing department's
toes, by the way, no matter how much they grumble). 
You may be wasting time doing things that don't help; who knows unless
you ask?

Anything you can do to lower cost and maintain a high level of quality
should be pursued, whether that means modifying a simple note that gives
them a lot of grief, or just including an HPGL fab dwg in the Gerber
package, whatever; but you MUST communicate.
