When testing to gerber you netlist the data anyway and with any luck you
should end up with the same netlist as the customer supplied netlist. I
would say the advantages are. Testing to data that will definately not
have been played about with by people down the line. Not having the
hassle of messing about trying to netlist gerber data which is not what
it was meant for. Avoiding netlisting the gerber incorrectly. However if
you want to locate faults from the data after test you may find some
netlist formats lacking in the necessary detail. You can BBT from pad
information only. To verify faults you at least want trace data.
Probably one of the most common formats is the IPC-356 but this doesnt
contain trace data.
BTW does anyone have any details on the net IPC-356-A?
Hope this of some help to you.
Best Regards.
