There have been several postings of late regarding the environmental
hazards of silver halide wastes from the photo plotting process. Wet
process photo plotting also creates significant human dangers. In a
recent incident, a photo operator opened the plotter to remove a stuck
film only to be exposed to ammonia fumes. Her lungs were badly seared,
a condition which could take 6 months to a year to correct.

An alternative to standard wet processing is Dry Imagesetting using
Polaroid's Dry Imagesetter film and Linotype-Hell's Dry Setter plotter.
The process is not only safer for humans and the environment, the films
dimensional stability far exceeds standard emulsion films. Line quality
is much sharper as the haloing effect on lines has been eliminated, and,
the D max is greater than standard films crea\ting a reliable medium
that can be exposed with existing parameters. Throughput is also
superior to standard processes.

AOI International is now installing the Dry Imagesetter process in PCB
shops.
