Hold off on Project "NIKE" for a little while. Make comparisons from
your MIL to J-Stds. Find out what is really expected. Find out how
much your product will really be affected. You may stay with MIL-STDs
when you find out the answer. Once you know the differences (made the
comparisons) then submit a concept paper to your customer and request
a block change. You will probably find out that the customer is more
than willing. The ones holding back is NASA since they really need
high reliability. When the change is approved, make sure you check
your commercial parts to make sure you don't get bit by a less than
     MIL part . . . i.e. . . plastics.

To some degree I was kidding about "Project NIKE", on the other hand
that may be a limited reply you get from your MIL customer. MIL
customers are looking for the end item and are less stringent on the
"how to". Our MIL customer is very open minded. We try to keep them
informed of what we are doing and include them on ALL team functions.
They are extremely helpful and participative. Hope this is a better
answer that the other e:mail of Just do it.

Who knows the easiest way to change my military contracts from
MIL-STD-2000 to ANSI-J-STD-001.
