Ed,

I recently read in a "Quality Digest" article that 
"ISO" is NOT an acronym.  As you mentioned in your
TechNet question, it is a greek word which means
"same" (or something like that).  I was surprised to
read that since, like many, I always assumed it
stood for "international standards organization.
