     Assuming that you have a good quality microscope, the first item I would
consider changing would be the camera & film.  A new digital camera would
increase your image quality and eliminate the scanner as well.  You will also
be saving the ongoing cost of the film.  Look for one with an optical
resolution of at least 640 x 480 pixels.  A higher pixel count will improve
quality but it will cost more.      
     Depending on the light source you are using, you may want to consider
increasing the available light.  The high intensity light sources that have
two flexible fiber optic light tubes work very well.  This type of light
source allows you to adjust the location and intensity of the light to best
display the subject being photographed.  Controlling the location of shadows
can greatly enhance the details in a photo.
     There are several other items that can reduce the quality of your
