"Groove" --

Moisture, i.e. humidity testing methods and criteria for mil-spec hardware
are described in MIL-STD-810E Method 507.3 ... equipment, cycles, etc are
spelled out. However, no pass/fail info is included. They assume your
staff Environmental Test Engineer can decide that. If you're like most of
us, you don't have a specialist on staff ... Check MIL-STD-810 Revision C or
D [these are earlier versions of 810] for some guidelines. On the fungus
test, MIL-STD-810E Method 508.4, describes testing procedures, including
which fungi you should buy for test, etc. etc. The testing is involved,
expensive, and not many labs do it. When I've had to do fungus inert
verification on mil-spec hardware (this should also work for commercial) ...
I review the bill of materials in the assembly in question, determine what
types of elastomers/polymers are included and check them against the list of
"Known fungus-inert materials" in MIL-STD-454, Requirement 4 ... as long as
you only have fungus inert materials in your assembly, there's no need to
test ... the list of such materials is not terribly restrictive. If you'd
like a copy of any of this stuff, please email me your fax number or
address. Good luck!
