Robert,

GE Plastics has a handy 40+ page Design Guide for Ultem that includes
several pages related to processing. You can reach them at 800-845-0600. In
the guide they say you can use conventional metalworking tools, but carbide
tipped tools are recommended for the 2000 series Ultem. Routing is not
specifically addressed. For turning they recommend cutting speeds of 500 to
2000 ft/min and feed rates of 0.005 to 0.02 in/revolution. Rake & clearance
angles greater than those for metal turning reduce surface friction. For
drilling/tapping, use std high-speed twist drills, feed rates of 0.005 to
0.015 in/revolution at cutting speeds of 300/ft/min.

Also, since Ultem is an amorphous thermoplastic DON't use hydrocarbon or oil
based cutting fluids!! They can lead to environmental stress cracking. If
you email me directly with your fax number, I'll send you copies of the
machining section of this design guide. Good luck!
