We can train an operator who never ran a machine or hand soldered in a
couple of weeks to run a wave or a few days for hand soldering using
no clean soldering on simple panels.

High density, poorly designed panels, old panels...etc, the operator
can be up an running fast, but operators with little experience will
produce very poor yield, experienced operators can produce "good"
yield in spite of the problems.

The big problem with conversion is not operator training, it is
machine set-up, panel profiling and product design. These are all
controlled by engineering, not by operator training.

As for military acceptance criteria, it depends on the operator how fast
they accept change, which varies operator to operator, and how much support
     change has from production supervision.

Subject: Time to train operators: J-STD-001 and LRNC flux

     Technetters:

I'd be interested to hear how long it takes to train an operator (who
is used to working to military soldering standards) the operator-
related parts of J-STD-001 (i.e., acceptance requirements). I'd also
like to hear how long it takes to train an operator (who is used to
working with RMA flux) to solder using a low-residue no-clean flux.
