We have ran both the full tunnel (50 - 100 ppm oxygen) and have now gone to
the Contour system (10 ppm oxygen at joint formation area) by Electrovert.
No difference that I know of, in the test probe contact arena. We are
using a 1.5 % solids flux however, which sounds a little stronger then what
you are using. I don't think that you would need the whole tunnel but, some
simple testing should give some answers.

Subject: ASSY: BOUNDARY VS. FULL TUNNEL WAVE SOLDER NITROGEN INERTING
Date: Friday, August 16, 1996 11:19

DOES ANYONE HAVE EXPERIENCE IN COMPARING INERTING THE WAVE
SOLDERING OPERATION ONLY AT THE WAVE AS OPPOSED TO FULL
TUNNEL INERTING?

CAN YOU GO TO VERY LOW SOLIDS FLUXES (0.5-1.0%) WITH
BOUNDARY INERTING OR DO YOU NEED THE FULL TUNNEL?

IF YOU CAN GET BY WITH BOUNDARY INERTING:

1. CAN YOU GAIN A BENEFIT BY BEING ABLE TO USE LESS
EXPENSIVE, LOW FORCE PROBE, TEST FIXTURES?

2. CAN YOU DECREASE THE FALSE REJECTS IN TEST WHICH ARE DUE
TO FLUX RESIDUES?
