At SMI '94 I saw an optical system that automatically soldered connectors.
It consisted of a focused, high-intensity quartz lamp and an automatic
wire-solder feeder. The board, with connector installed, was stepped along
in the focused beam while the wire-solder feeder fed solder when the
board stopped at each joint. The thing worked great and was lightening fast!
I don't remember who made it or what it was called. Perhaps someone else saw
it and can help.
