In reply to some of your questions.

1) For many many moons (at least 20 years)
2) Everybody and there dog manufactures thick film resistor technology.
Just to name a few of these people: Vishay/Ohmtek, IRC, and KOA.
3) They are cheaper than dirt, virtually indestructible and I would
hazard to guess that they are used on almost every SMT product produced.
4) What do you mean by "conventional resistor" i.e. wirewound, Carbon
Slug, Carbon Composition, Metal Film? Depending on the technology you
are trying to refer to has different advantages.

I hope this answers some of your questions.

I am a Senior electrical engineering student from Southern University in
Baton Rouge, LA and I would like to get some information on thickfilm
resistor technology.

1. How long has this technology been around?
2. Who manufactures it and how is it manufactured?
3. What (if any) are the economic issues concerning the use of this
technology?
4. What are the advantages, to industry, of using thickfilm vs.
conventional resistors?
5. Are there any pictures of the process (from screen printing, to after
the ink is dried and fired, to its actual application) which I could
include on my homepage?

I would greatly appreciate any information you could send to me. I
would also appreciate any other references you could suggest. I can be
reached at

Sincerest thanks,
Anita Tillman
