I believe the RS274-X format has resolved a lot of problems for vendors
and clients. In a previous life, I managed a CAM and CAD department and
fought these battles.
I would however reccomend you get a Gerber viewer to do a quick review
of the gerber. I use ECAM myself to check gerber files before committing
to fabrication. I say this because not software vendors implement-generate
the code the same. I have had very few inquiries about files, if I do a
quick review of the files first. With the Ecam program I also send along a
report of apertures used in a file.
There are a number of vendors now offering viewers as freeware or shareware.
