Subject: Europe Considering Ban on Lead in Automobiles
Date: Monday, November 18, 1996 10:52AM

The Electronics Industry Association recently reported that a proposal =
has been drafted for consideration of the European Parliament and the =
Council of the European Union that, among other things, would prohibit =
the use of lead and mercury (except in batteries), cadmium, hexavalent =
chromium, and PCV in vehicles beginning January 2002. The draft is at a =
preliminary stage and must receieve approval by the European Uniion =
Commissioners and the European Parliament before it becomes final, and =
each Member State must also pass implementing legislation. Given the =
widespread use of these materials in electronic products used in =
automobiles, this proposal could be significant if ultimately enacted.
