The Electronics Industry Association recently reported that a proposal has been drafted for consideration of the European Parliament and the Council of the European Union that, among other things, would prohibit the use of lead and mercury (except in batteries), cadmium, hexavalent chromium, and PCV in vehicles beginning January 2002. The draft is at a preliminary stage and must receieve approval by the European Uniion Commissioners and the European Parliament before it becomes final, and each Member State must also pass implementing legislation. Given the widespread use of these materials in electronic products used in automobiles, this proposal could be significant if ultimately enacted.
