     John et al,
At a forum on reducing heavy metals in municipal solid waste held in
December, 1992, we learned (Chris R, Michael K, and I) from another breakout
session (we were in the one with scrap PWBs and lead) that mercury is required
in the fluorescent bulb "process". F.bulb mfgrs have been reducing the amount of
Hg in these bulbs from 48 mg in 1985 to 42 in 1990 and even 27 mg reported in
1992. The T8 bulb is supposed to have less than 20 mg. One mfgr reported then
that their bulbs had only 16 mg. (NOTE: All values are for 4' bulbs.)
You Q about bulb life is appropriate, as that seems to be the barrier to
lowering Hg content, since the Hg apparently combines with the bulb glass during
its life. Either alternative glass or glass coatings are needed to further lower
the consumption of Hg during bulb life and hence lower overall Hg content.
Info on the forum was published by EPA in September 1993 (EPA
901-R-93-001 "Report of the National Technical Forum on Source Reduction of
Heavy Metals in Municipal Solid Waste".
I don't know what other states are doing, but we can recycle these bulbs
under the scrap metal exemption in NH. We utilize new bulb packaging to protect
replaced bulbs during storage and shipment. Lee

Philips makes a low Hg bulb called the Alto. This bulb has the full color
spectrum and cost about .30 more per bulb.

Hello ComplianceNetters:

Does anyone know a source for mercury-free fluorescent light tubes, in
4-foot lengths? If anyone has been using them, I would like to know the
vendor contact, and how well they light, and how long they last.
