Hi all,
I heard from one of our other Merix environmental engineers that the
deadline for submitting 313 reports has been extended to August 1, 1997.
This information was gained at an EPCRA training class given today, May
22. By the way, has anyone received their information packets and
computer disks for the reports yet?
Also, attached below is an OPPT Newsbreak about the TRI statistics from
1996.

NEWS
"EPA Says Release of Toxic Chemicals Fell 46% Since 1988."
Wall
Street Journal, 21 May 97, A16.
EPA announced yesterday that toxic chemicals released into
the environment in the United States have declined by 46%,
or 1.3 billion pounds, since 1988. The 1995 data show
that
air and water pollution and dumping on land has declined,
but there was an increase of 19.5% in pollutants injected
into underground wells. The top three released chemicals
were methanol, ammonia, and toluene; Texas ranked first in
toxic releases with 283 million pounds and Louisiana
ranked
second with 172 million pounds; the chemical industry
reported releases of 787 million pounds, the
primary-metals
industry reported 331 million pounds, and paper industries
reported 233 million pounds. The data included 286 new
chemicals, with nitrate compounds registering the highest
levels of release among those chemicals. "EPA
Administrator
Carol M. Browner said the results show that the Right to
Know Act, passed in 1986, is one of the `most effective,
common-sense' environmental laws."
