The copper mirror corrosion test is outlined in ANSI-J-STD-004. The test
sample is a glass slide with a thin film of copper vacuum deposited on the
surface. Three drops of the flux are placed on the slide for a set amount of
time. A benign flux will not eat through the copper, a moderate flux will
partially eat through, and an active flux will eat totally through.

wave soldering ?
It is generally accepted that water soluble fluxes, as active fluxes, will
eat through the copper, thus failing this test. If you are using a flux
which has been qualified to J-STD-004 or MIL-F-14256, the vendor should
already have these test results available.
>> 3. What are the other tests which need to be done before using the water
soluble flux for wave soldering ?
It depends on what your goals are and what your customer wants. If you are
manufacturing to old contracts for military, you may need to do MIL-STD-2000A
testing before you can make such a change. For commercial customers, testing
to ANSI J-STD-001 would be a minimum recommendation. It all depends on what
your customer or your management considers to be an adequate demonstration
that the new process is acceptable. For right now, I would suggest that you
use J-STD-001, the A revision, since the B revision qualification scheme has
a few bugs that need to be worked out.
