Thanks to all who responded to my request for information on this
subject. I spoke on the phone with Dale Wilheit at IBM Austin, who added
something that may be of interest. In his operation, he uses the
technique of "pre-control", which I believe was proposed by Dorian
Shainin. At the end of every shift (3 per day) the operator takes a
reading with a UV power meter and plots it on a pre-control chart. The
pre-control technique is a very simple imitation of SPC. Dale said he
has a lot of turnover, so doesn't want to spend time training operators
in SPC. Pre-control is quick and easy, and would seem to give him a
substantial portion of the information and guidance that true SPC would.
