Paresh,
There is no real standard that I'm aware of for visual residues of
no-clean flux. You may have to develop your own visual acceptance
criteria for cosmetic reasons. Will it create a problem in the field?
Probably not, since most no-clean flux residues are inert. If you've
ever worked on TV's or stereos, you will see gobs of rosin flux
residues on the circuit boards, yet many of these electronic devices
continue to operate for over 10 years. However, reliability depends on
the flux type. Get a spec. sheet for the flux and core solder, and
look at the following IPC and Bellcore reliability test results:
1)Copper Mirror; 2) Halide; 3)SIR; 4)Electromigration.

Subject: Assy:Flux residue on SMC

Hello everyone,
We have one SM chip on our boards which is put on by a contractor. Lately,
we are seeing excessive flux residues on and around the pads. The residues
have look of frosted crystals. The flux used is a no-clean flux.
Is it acceptable for these residues to be there? Will it create any problem
now or later? What is acceptability standard?
Thanks for your help,
Paresh Patel
