Tim,
The cathode end of a diode is marked by a square pad on the PCB. There are
other ways of marking the cathode end of a diode on a PCB. One way we mark
PCBs are by putting a line on the cathode end. The above information was
found in a "Component Identification" Desk Reference Manual written by IPC.
