Norm,
     I agree 100%.  Pink ring is not a design issue and direct connect
vias should have no effect on whether or not you see pink ring.

I would like to recommend the TechNet forum for anyone who would like
learn more about PCB fabrication technology.  There have been several
excellent threads there about this very topic.
