Hi folks - here is the Quiz! Since Clumpy and Kloumpios are adhering to
their good social distancing practices and are spending this week being
isolated after helping Carl Van Wormer, we are going to have a slight twist
to the Quiz. You are allowed to use any resource you want to answer the
following questions. First person to get all the questions correct is our
winner:

The Question: Many of the elements had names proposed for them that were
not chosen. Provide the name of the element for the proposed names that
did not get selected:

a) Panchromium = Vanadium
When vanadium was discovered, the metal salts it produced formed a wide
variety of colors, so the proposed name was named "panchromium" translated
from the Greek word for "all colors".

b) Columbium = Niobium
The naming controversy raged for over 100 years on who discovered element
41. It was said you could tell if a metallurgist was European or an
American by the name they used for element 41.

e) Austrium = Magnesium
Anton Rupprecht produced an impure form of magnesium and proposed the name
"austrium" after his native Austria. However, the first pure sample was
produced by Sir Humphrey Davy who proposed the name "magnium" as he felt
that magnesium was too similar to "manganese". Element 12 was ultimately
named for the magnesium mineral that came from Magnesia, Greece.

So this is going to get really weird! Nobody actually got it right,
primarily due to the fact that Wikipedia isn't right! For some reason,
Wiki does not acknowledge the history of Anton Rupprecht's involvement in
the discovery of magnesium and instead points readers to gallium. So Clumpy
& Kloumpios are going to "virtually assist" Bhanu, Ravinder and Graham this
week!

- After Clumpy & Kloumpios go through the 2-week quarantine process, I'll
have them disinfect the factory, and then finish up the ShortSniffer final
testing and decontamination process. This may make them unavailable for
the next two Element Quiz events, but we all have to make sacrifices for
the greater good . . .

Week 114 Bhanu Sood, NASA

- assisted with ????

Week 114 Ravinder Ajmani, Western Digital

- assisted with ????

Week 114 Graham Naisbitt, Gen3

I hope everyone has an awesome week!
