Hi folks - here is the Quiz:
The Question:
This element is fifth in cosmic abundance after hydrogen, helium, oxygen
and carbon but it is rare on Earth. After 1902, Air Liquide produced
industrial quantities of this element as a byproduct of their
air-liquefaction business. The most abundant isotope of this element is
created by the carbon-burning process of stellar nucleosynthesis. A bright
reddish-orange color. What element is being described?
The Answer:
The element is Neon (Ne)! Neon was discovered (along with krypton and
xenon) in 1898 as one of the three residual rare inert elements remaining
in dry air, after nitrogen, oxygen, argon and carbon dioxide were removed.
In August 2015, based on studies with the LADEE spacecraft, NASA scientists
reported the detection of neon in the exosphere of the moon. Neon tubes
were introduced to the U.S. in 1923 with two large neon signs bought by a
Los Angeles Packard car dealership. The glow and arresting red color made
neon advertising completely different from the competition.
The winner(s) of the quiz is Ron Feyereisen and he will get the services
of Clumpy & Kloumpios for the week.
There won't be an Element Quiz the following two weeks as Clumpy and
Kloumpios will be attending the IPC APEX conference assisting the TechNet
folks with tasks there.
So far Clumpy and Kloumpios have done the following:

- Good to win this week as they can help me finish my overview of uses of
NMP and methylene chloride for IPC Government Relations to send on to EPA
Toxics Risk Evaluation. Before they leave Cedar Rapids, you might have
them review your assembly area to see if NMP is a minor ingredient in any
of your cleaners. The last one I am chasing is a possible inclusion as a
minor ingredient in solder paste. EPA knows about that use, already. I
cannot find any methylene chloride used in circuit board fabrication or
assembly anywhere. Finally, have them bring an ax, i am not sure if I have
enough firewood put away for a colder than average Indiana winter. I am
sure they can use a chainsaw. Great to have them next week.
Week 106 Russell Kido, Practical Components
