All of the component clearance guidelines are in design specification IPC-D-279.

Subject: Re: [DC] SMD to mounting hole standard, is there one..?

Clearance to hardware needs to be accommodated. Also, strain on solder joints and ceramic chip parts is very important to keep an eye on. If they are using wave solder, they may have solder pallet clearance issues. All these things are process driven or product application driven or both. No true rule of thumb as it boils down to enough clearance based on the application.

Subject: [DC] SMD to mounting hole standard, is there one..?

Just checking, we have a board that we assembled in house and as it was transferred to a CM they are citing that the SMD is too close to a mounting hole... I'm aware that CM want the biggest door to walk through, however is there an IPC standard for this..? Or should they be setting the torque for the hardware, basically the screw used..? any incite would be helpful…

SMD to:

  *   hole wall
  *   pad
  * hardware (screw head and or washer)
