The Question:

The pure form of this element was not achieved until 1937 and commercial
applications did not occur until the 1970's. The global production of this
element is approximately 15 tons per year. The main application of this
element is a constituent addition for some aluminum alloys for minor
aerospace industry components. These aluminum alloys were used in the
Russian military aircraft, specifically the MiG-21 and MiG-29. Lacrosse
sticks are also made with this alloy. Name the element being described?
The Answer:

The element is Scandium (Sc)! Metallic scandium was produced for the first
time in 1937 by electrolysis of a eutectic mixture of potassium, lithium,
and scandium chlorides, at 700–800 °C. The first pound of 99% pure scandium
metal was produced in 1960. Aluminum-scandium alloys are used for minor
aerospace industry components and these alloys contain between 0.1% and
0.5% of scandium. The first scandium-based metal-halide lamps were patented
by General Electric.

The winner of the quiz is Leland Woodall and will get the services of Clumpy
& Kloumpios for the week. Doug had the right answer but Leland was first
with the right response.

The guys will then will go straight to the IPC APEX conference in San Diego
to assist the TechNet community with conference tasks - keep an eye out for
the guys!

So far Clumpy and Kloumpios have done the following:
