The Question:
This element reacts with water forming hydrogen. This element is never
found as a free element in nature. In 2018, a rich supply of this element
was discovered off the coast of Japan's Minamitori Island. An oxide of this
element is used in green phosphors in fluorescent lamps and color TV tubes
(does anyone remember those?). A borate compound containing this element is
used in solid state devices. The mineral xenotime. Name the element being
described?
The Answer:
The element is Terbium (Tb). Terbium oxide
<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oxide> is used in green phosphors in
fluorescent lamps and color TV tubes. Sodium terbium borate is used in solid
state devices. Terbium is contained along with other rare earth elements in
many minerals, including monazite, xenotime and euxenite.
The winner of the quiz is Russell Kido, Practical Components, and he will
get the services of Clumpy & Kloumpios for the week. Scott Decker, Collins
Aerospace, was a very close second with his answer being just one minute
behind Russell's response. Tony Lentz, FCT Assembly, gets honorable mention
as the clues create the illusion that the element could be Yttrium.
Unfortunately, EQAB did not accept Doug's submission of "godzillium" as a
correct response. EQAB checked with the American Museum of Natural History
Mythical Creatures group. Their response was that godzillium may be an
element but since the element quiz documented that the element in question
would from hydrogen when combine with water, godzillium would not fit the
listed clues as the resulting explosion from the reaction with Godzilla's
breath would have been a global catastrophic event.
So far Clumpy and Kloumpios have done the following:

- the boys will help on a 1kV/2kA PCB design, after convinced the customer,
they will visit the Flensburg Christmas market and get several "Punsch"

- Perfect timing! The rain has stopped and they can enjoy some sun. If
they get here in time, I’ll try to sneak them into the photo of my
daughter’s b-ball team this weekend. The rest of the week they can help me
with some troubleshooting issues, roof leaks, getting ready for the
holidays, Nepcon and Apex next month.
