Perfect timing! The rain has stopped and they can enjoy some sun. If they get here in time, I’ll try to sneak them into the photo of my daughter’s b-ball team this weekend. The rest of the week they can help me with some troubleshooting issues, roof leaks, getting ready for the holidays, Nepcon and Apex next month.

Regards,

Russell Kido

Subject: [TN] Element Quiz Answer

The Question:

This element is extremely stable and almost completely non-reactive which

is one reason for its name. Until 1957, the symbol for this element was a

single letter. The atmosphere of Mars contains this element. This element is

used to displace oxygen- and moisture-containing air in packaging material

to extend the shelf-lives of the contents. This element is widely used in a

number of spectroscopy applications (i.e. ICP, FIB, etc.). Name the element

being described?

The Answer:

The element is Argon (Ar)! Argon derives its name from the Greek "argos"

which means " inactive". Until 1957, the symbol for argon was "A", but now

is "Ar" (its true, I looked at the 1927 Periodic Table I have). The

atmospheres of Mars, Mercury and Titan (the largest moon of Saturn) all

contain argon. Argon may be used as the carrier gas in gas chromatography

and in electrospray ionization mass spectrometry; it is the gas of choice

for the plasma used in ICP spectroscopy.

The winner of the quiz will is Russell Kido, Practical Components and

will get the services of Clumpy & Kloumpios for the week.

The EQAB reviewed Doug's submission of "StableGon" and unfortunately the

response was disqualified. Discussions with NASA experts on Mars could not

confirm the existence of StableGon but EQAB would rule Doug's answer

correct if the new Mars probe does find any evidence of the half fractional

element in the future. Additionally, inquires into the IUPAC records show

no evidence of the information Doug stated.

So far Clumpy and Kloumpios have done the following:
