The Question:
A member of the Russian Academy of Science discovered this element at Kazan
State University in Russia and named it after the Latin name for his
homeland The corrosion resistance of titanium is increased markedly by the
addition of a small amount of this element. This element can be found in in
plates, medals, and ruble coinage, starting in 1828 in Russia. This
element's dioxide is used in thick-film chip resistors accounting for 50%
of the element's commercial consumption. What element is being described?

The Answer:
The element is Ruthenium (Ru). The Russian-born scientist of Baltic-German
ancestry and a member of the Russian Academy of Science Karl Ernst Claus
discovered the element in 1844 at Kazan State University in Russia and
named it after the Latin name of his homeland, Ruthenia. Ruthenium dioxide
with lead and bismuth ruthenates are used in thick-film chip resistors. A
new application of ruthenium is acting as the capping layer for extreme
ultraviolet photo masks. Roughly 12 tonnes of ruthenium are mined each year
with world reserves estimated at 5,000 tonnes.

The winner of the quiz is Tom Carroll, Boeing and he will get the services
of Clumpy and Kloumpios for the week.

EQAB did review Doug's submission of "tzarium" but unfortunately was not
able to confirm his response as acceptable. The ASM Handbook series does
contain 36 volumes but the highest volume is #23 Materials for Medical
Devices. Additionally, no evidence of "bolshevik corrosion" was found in
the published literature as confirmed by the ASM Handbook Volume 13 A/B/C
Corrosion.

Sorry Doug, better luck next time (has anyone else noticed that individuals
who have reportedly discovered a half fractional element have come to
untimely ends?).

No quiz for a couple weeks as the boys are going to be assisting TechNet
members at the IPC Fall meetings and helping me with "lead-free alloy
ballistics testing on North American waterfowl" (aka I am going duck
hunting and we use non-leaded ammunition).

So far Clumpy and Kloumpios have done the following:

Week 74 Drew Meyer, Benchmark Electronics
- I would defer to Leland if he needs the help. Getting very cold here and
supposed to rain often. The boys probably would enjoy some warmth for a
week. Fun to drag out some little snip of information stored decades ago.
Read up on Wilhelm again!

Week 74 Leland Woodall
- The weather here is pretty nice, so the guys can assist with generating
the Quality reports for September for a day or so, and then perform some
outside work around the house. I'll try to take it easy on 'em!

Week 75 Mordechai Kirshenbaum
- They missed the connection and had to wait 8 hours at Heathrow. This is
their third visit to Israel. This time they are going to work hard. At
least the weather is fine.

Week 76 Tom Carroll, Boeing
- assisted with ????

I hope everyone has a awesome week!
