 The Question:
This element is radioactive, poisonous and pyrophoric! This element can be
found in our environment due to atmospheric nuclear explosions that took
place between the detonation of the first atomic bomb in 1945 and the
ratification of the Partial Nuclear Test Ban Treaty in 1963. It is
estimated that approximately 2500 kg of the element is running around the
planet due to those activities. This element has no commercial uses. This
element derives its name due to its relationship with another element on
the Periodic Table. What element is being described?

The Answer:
The element is Neptunium (Np)! Finely powered neptunium will spontaneously
burst into flame in air at room temperature. Neptunium accumulates in
commercial household ionization-chamber smoke detectors from decay of the
(typically) 0.2 micro-gram of americium-241 initially present as a source
of ionizing radiation. With a half-life of 432 years, the americium-241 in
an ionization smoke detector includes about 3% neptunium after 20 years,
and about 15% after 100 years. Neptunium derived its name from the fact
that it falls in the Periodic Table after Uranium (Neptune is the next
planet beyond Uranus in our solar system).

Ok, so how many people have a smoke detector that is actually 20 years old?
