If the finished assembly requires electrical clearance to the case, other stacked assemblies, or other clearance, the dimensions for lead protrusion should always be on the assembly drawing. Otherwise, use the design minimum electrical clearance requirement found on the PWB fabrication notes.
No notes on either print? Fire the designer.

Are you referring to measuring lead length before or after the parts are mounted on an assembly? if it is after the parts are mounted, J-STD-001 states that dimensional measurement is not required except for referee purposes.

Subject: [TN] Trimmed lead measurement / calibration

Hi T-netters;
The Company just certified to AS9100.
One of the minor observations related to the method used to measure the lead length to insure compliance with IPC requirements.
Are there any tools/devices/equipment available to measure lead lengths that is repeatable/traceable and will fulfill the AS9100 requirement?
I look forward to your responses.
Regards,
Rob
