AGREE!!! Problem is you need the ECAD/MCAD Collaborator on both tools.

I priced it from Mentor for PADS it was over 5K, the PTC Creo side was only 2K

So why is the ECAD side more than double the MCAD Side?

So you would be looking at 7K just for real time collaboration between the two tools.

Too expensive for us, but if there were more controls and capability on the step output

From Mentor we can live with the more manual process between ECAD & MCAD if there output & control of output was better.

"What we have here is a failure to communicate!!"

Same problem here as with gerber/odb++/gencam, yes we need a generic standard.

Absolutely. There could be a simple ECAD >> [EXCHANGE STANDARD] << MCAD, like Solidworks and Altium have. I hate it that it is a PAY-FOR-INTERFACE and PLATFORM SPECIFIC exchange model. But, the concept I agree with and this model works great - but not with Catia, Creo, others - only Solidworks.

We do the same.

My point is that the MCAD systems are MUCH better at this than the ECAD systems. Which is why I think it would be a better use of development efforts to make a better interface between the two. Why try to basically put an entire watered down MCAD system into the ECAD system, when it already exists in a much more complete form in actual MCAD software? Let ECAD do ECAD and MCAD do MCAD, and focus development efforts on better linking the 2. The old adage "Jack of all trades, master of none" comes to mind,.

As for Silkscreen, yes, a shortcoming in the existing IDF interface (better interface?). I had to write a script from PADS to add markings to Solidworks.

Pete
