There are also inspection prisms, if you do not need an X-ray view. Here is one: http://www.techni-tool.com/550SO840
There are many brands, and they work quite well.
You use them in conjunction with a good microscope with at least a 4" working distance (focal point). You look straight down at the prism, and through the scope you can inspect the BGA spheres quite well, if you haven't had too much coffee.
A good practice is to have a couple beers or a shot of Akvavit first. Hey, it's justified!

Hi Frank,

You might want to look at something like that http://www.kurtzersa.com/electronics-production-equipment/rework-inspection-systems/inspection-systems/produkt-details/ersascope-1.html

I believe Metcal make something similar (?)

Best regards,

Ioan

I'm looking for a way to non-destructively view BGA balls on a populated PCA.
Does anyone know of a microscope accessory that will allow 90 degree viewing?
Some kind of mirror or a very small camera, etc.
Mostly I am interested in outer ring balls only.
Something I can inspect solder joints with on a heavily populated board.
Xray and CSAM are not where I want to go, I am hoping for something using a microscope.
Any help is appreciated,
FNK
