well,  someone did irradiating diamond to create blue diamond using a  
borrowed large pure diamond with little defect... after study the  
defect contributed to the blue color, the chap decided to increase  
the dosage - he got more or less of condensed graphite... and have  
trouble to try explain to the owner of the diamond what actually  
happened... (i don't think  the owner believe the "science" that much).
