MELFs are still a very common part, and the u-shaped pads that go with them are also commonly used, with the exception of situations where other package styles could be used.

Most still End up Laying on the Floor!

MELF's still are used in a lot of the boards that we build, but I haven't seen :"U" shaped pads in a long, long time.
