I reviewed the document as well.  Unfortunately, I came to the same conclusion as you.  It sounds like the device requires the full load in order for the calibration to be conducted.

Fellow TechNetters:

   I have the above stated Digital Force Gauge Instrument.   Does anyone out there has this similar model gauge or knowledgeable enough to conduct a calibration test without having to suspense the full capacity, 500 lbs., of the gauge on the hook.   The calibration section of the user manual is vague in my humble opinion.   Perhaps I have mis-read the statement.
