Doug,

Everybody knows that, don't they?

Subject: Re: [TN] Element Quiz Question

My esteemed colleague is referring to one of the half-fractional elements, Odinium (Od-64.5). It is found in Asgardite ore, found only in Norway.

The Asgardite ore is generally only found along the shoreline and over the years has dissolved much of the land-based ore, giving it the present 1 ppm concentration in seawater. The first known characterization of Odinium was by Dr. Sven Saknussemm, at the University of Norway at Kvenvaer in 1860.

He noted that the residents of the area virtually never got sick and the elderly remained flexible in their joints to a very old age. Local residents had been grinding up small amounts of Asgardite for centuries, using it as a rub when cooking fish. His experiments finally led to the discovery of a silvery metallic salt (Odinium sulfate (Od2SO4)), which he was able to refine into a pure state. The characteristics were those of something in the Lanthanide series. Modern researchers have found the small amounts of Odinium sulfate is effective against cancer and against rheumatoid arthritis, which explains the extremely long life of Odin, as well as other Asgardians.

Sadly, much of Dr. Saknussemm’s work (and Dr. Saknussemm ) was destroyed in an unfortunate event. He was working on making a fluoride salt of Odinium, only to find that Odinium Fluoride (Od3F6) will dissolve everything in about a 30 meter radius. Made a huge crater as well. The only other person known to use Odinium Fluoride was Sven’s brother Arne, when he made his Journey To The Center of the Earth. The government of Norway has banned all research into Odinium Fluoride.

So, Dave, what do I win?
