Dave,

You can tell Clumpy and Kloumpios to get on the first available flight to JFK, I live a mile from the JFK AirTrain station in Howard Beach, NY. Clumpy and Kloumpios can help me prepare some flammability burn test samples for an FAA project that I'm working on. After that they can go fishing in Jamaica Bay and catch some dinner.

Regards,

Tom

Subject: [TN] Element Quiz Answer

Here is the Element Quiz Question:

The Question:

This element is one of the few elements that can form covalent bonds with itself as well as metals and nonmetals. The Greek word for "the invincible"

describes a allotrope of this element. The 1996 Nobel Prize for Chemistry relates to this element. In the 1700's, it was thought a form of this element was a form of lead. Which element is being described?

The Answer:

The element is Carbon (C)! Carbon has a number of allotropic forms such as diamond (in Greek, "adamas" or "the invincible") and graphite ("graphein"

or "to write"). In 1779, Carl Scheele demonstrated that charcoal was a form of carbon and not lead. The winners of the 1996 Nobel Prize for Chemistry was due to their discovery of the carbon allotrope fullerenes (aka buckyballs), which lead the way for today's nanotube research.

The winner of the quiz is Tom Carroll, Boeing and will get the services of Clumpy and Kloumpios for the week. Lots of correct answers, Tom just narrowly beat several folks with his response.
