Here is the Element Quiz Question:

The Question:
This element is one of the few elements that can form covalent bonds with
itself as well as metals and nonmetals. The Greek word for "the invincible"
describes a allotrope of this element. The 1996 Nobel Prize for Chemistry
relates to this element. In the 1700's, it was thought a form of this
element was a form of lead. Which element is being described?

The Answer:
The element is Carbon (C)! Carbon has a number of allotropic forms such as
diamond (in Greek, "adamas" or "the invincible") and graphite ("graphein"
or "to write"). In 1779, Carl Scheele demonstrated that charcoal was a form
of carbon and not lead. The winners of the 1996 Nobel Prize for Chemistry
was due to their discovery of the carbon allotrope fullerenes (aka
buckyballs), which lead the way for today's nanotube research.
