The Question:
This element is associated with Wood's metal. This element has wide spread
commercial use in batteries and nuclear reactor control rods. It's
compounds are/were used to make brilliant red, yellow and orange colors in
oil paints. This element is toxic to the human body. Which element is being
described?

The Answer:
The element is Cadmium (Cd)! Cadmium is an element that has a tremendous
applications but is comes with a host of hazard and toxicity issues.
Nickel-cadmium batteries and the neutron absorbing control rods are two of
the many commercial uses. Wood's metal is an alloy of Cd/Pb/Bi/Sn with a
melting point of 70C making it ideal for repairing antiques. Its most
important application maybe in fire suppression/sprinkler systems.


The winners of the quiz are Keith Calhoun, Sopark Corp., and Ian Fox, Rolls
Royce, and  they will get the services of Clumpy and Kloumpios for the week
after Xmas. Keith's and Ian's answers arrived  at 8:00AM per the firewall
time stamp in a tie. The boys are going to spend their holiday at home
celebrating with their families and then head for Keith's and Ian's
facilities.

FEQAB reviewed Doug's response of "Lumberium" and disqualified that answer.
FEQAB contacted the National Lumber and Building Material Dealers
Association (NLBMDA)  for validation of "Lumberium" as a component of
hardwoods and there was no records to backup Doug's claims. As an avid wood
burning stove user, I have dealt with osage orange trees and have found no
presence of "Lumberium".
