Correct; there is no requirement that the resistor bands be visible after processing. If Bob had said CAPACITORS, I would have responded differently. Maybe.

610F section 10.5 n page 10-29 states in part; "Component markings, ----- should be legible -----. However, unless otherwise required, it is an acceptable condition if these markings are removed or damaged during normal cleaning or processing".

Based on the above, determining whether the parts are technically acceptable or not depends on the following:

1. parts are known to not be suspect or confirmed counterfeit. In some cases, component marking issues can be an indication of suspect counterfeit.

2. the manufacturing process assures that the correct part number parts were installed n the assembly; important since final acceptance testing may not be capable of detecting correct parts installed.

3. assembly passed final acceptance testing.

However, if the applicable part specification mandates permanent marking, you may need to pursue corrective action with the part manufacturer.

I would disposition this as:

"No defect, cosmetic in nature only. Does not affect form, fit, function or reliability of unit. Color bands are not needed after assembly, and test results prove all components are correct. Reference Designators are present on PWB for future component identification if needed."

Subject: [TN] Color Bands of Resistor Get Washed Off

We are putting together an assembly that must meet IPC-A-610 Rev F inspection reqts for Clss III.

After SMT THOLE resistors, where the marking could be easily seen, were hand soldered in to place. The entire assembly was washed and then inspected. At this point it was noted that the bands were pretty much no longer there.

The boards were tested and then conformally coated and shipped. The client noted the defect of the missing resistor bands.

What would the call be?

Thanks
