The AS4461 is better suited for non-circuit board assembly as it specifically deals with wires, cables, terminals and terminal soldering. J-Std-001 is directed more at circuit card soldering. The AS4461 is more closely related to IPC-A-620. The 620 document has even more information.

I need to know which of these is preferred for non-circuit board assembly - wire harnesses etc. for on aircraft equipment? Anyone know the differences between the two?
